Blog : FEB 2010
Well, a lot has happened since I have completed the 1st two episodes! I have just finished writing the 5th Episode (taking a little rest before I mix it down to give it to John) and Rob is getting ready to give me the 6th episode.
When I last wrote the blog, I was still on Logic Pro7 and although no. 8 was out, which I was waiting to upgrade to, they released no. 9 very quickly (it only seemed a matter of months between the two!).
I upgraded to Logic 9 and have been very impressed with the changes Apple have made to Logic – its audio editing and features are at least not so awful as they were!
Episode 3 gave me the chance to explore REASON4 as there were those fantastic Donai to write for! I used the Thor synth and rewired with Logic 9, although I found it easier in the end to bounce to audio and then use the files and audio files in Logic. The reasons for this were purely creative rather than technical – I was enjoying using the new audio editing features in Logic and the new fantastic Delay Designer and wanted to feature those in the sounds that were being used!
I was really very happy with the sound I got for those scenes and pleased that Rob and John liked them too. Episode 3 also saw the creation of the ‘Libertad’ theme, which is based on military and nationalistic themes. This is a theme that is going to occur quite a few times I feel and one that I am really pleased with.
Episode 4 see’s a big fight theme for Sacar and Loner, which I was very excited to write for. This required a lot of work. I wanted it to be quite ‘techno’ in feel and very driving but I also wanted it to feature some new ‘drums’. I was lucky to be put in touch with a young ‘Dhol’ drummer who was willing to record some of his drumming for me. This resulted in some fantastic and useful rhythms that I am definitely going to be using throughout the series. I was also able to explore even further the audio editing features in Logic 9 – the flex tool is just a fantastic tool to use, if you can you should check it out!
Rob is starting to incorporate lots more dream/nightmare like animation sequences in the series at this point and this is giving me an excellent opportunity to create my own sounds on all of Logic’s synths – especially the Sculpture. A chance to really let my imagination fly and give the series some really unique sounds!
Having just finished writing a huge scene for a new character introduced in Episode 5 I am feeling very, very pleased with how the music and the series are shaping up – as I said in the last blog this is going to develop and grow as the story and the characters do and I am already looking forward to episode 6!
